Kotor, Montenegro

July 18, 2017

Not to start off on a sad note but this view is that greeted us as we arrived in Kotor, Montenegro

What you see here are the olive groves burning because of the heat and lack of rain.

The local population is of course quite concerned about these fires and the effect on the land and economy. They do not appear to have the resources that we have in British Columbia (I never saw a water bomber the entire day). It appears the effects of global warming are in fact, Global.

The residents do however have a comedic side as well in spite of these fires as can be seen in the sign below.

But onto a happier topic. Today we registered for a rather different shore excursion. It started with a typical tour of the old town

Well fortified town for sure

Kotor’s claim to fame, as far as history is concerned, is that it is one of the few countries that was never beaten but the Turkish Empire. The Turks tried several times over 100 years but Kotor stood up to them each time. The walls in these pictures surround the town and extend up into the mountains above.

This clock has taken a licking but still keeps on ticking

In the centre of town is the seat of shame. Those who committed a crime would be tied up to this chair to be viewed by the local residents. As everyone knew everyone, being tied to this chair would bring shame upon you and your family.

Not sure they had the happy face back then.

This church was built in 1166

As most of you know I belong to a motorcycle club call the Fukawi. One our our group rides a trike and when I saw this one I had to add it to the blog

Nice ride and it's covered

And all our members can fit into it.

After our tour of the town we were welcomed into the home of a local resident couple to get a feel for what it is like to live here. We were treated to some local grappa and wine and then sat down to a traditional Kotor meal. The meal included olives of course, the largest tomatoes I’ve ever seen, local mussels paired with homemade risotto and followed by a main course of, again, homemade gnocchi mixed into a beef stew.

Our hosts

The local grappa is 52% alcohol and as clear as water (still couldn’t fool Sheryl in drinking it though)

Yum Yum

Didn't need dinner after this great lunch. Tomorrow we dock at Corfu, Greece.

  1. Ok, when we floated the idea of a chase vehicle for our next trip that wasn't quite what we had in mind, but then again.........?
